VA Adaptive Sports Grant Opportunity: Funding Available for Veteran-Focused Programs

Organizations working to expand access to adaptive sports for Veterans have a significant funding opportunity through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Adaptive Sports Grant Program. More than just a funding source, this program is part of a broader national effort to improve independence, well-being, and quality of life for disabled Veterans through sport and recreation.

What This Program Is Designed to Do

At its core, the grant is intended to help organizations plan, develop, and operate adaptive sports programs for disabled Veterans and members of the Armed Forces. Funding is not limited to a single aspect of programming—it’s built to support the full ecosystem required to run impactful initiatives.

This includes everything from training and competition opportunities to equipment, program development, and athlete support systems. Organizations can also leverage funding for coaching education, technical assistance, and program administration—making it a comprehensive resource for both growing and established programs.

           Who Should Be Paying Attention

This opportunity is best suited for non-federal organizations with proven experience in adaptive sports, particularly those operating at scale or with the capacity to expand. Eligibility is structured to prioritize programs that demonstrate reach, structure, and alignment with recognized sports systems.

In practical terms, that includes organizations affiliated with Paralympic or national governing bodies, as well as programs already serving

more than 50 participants with disabilities that are operating in at least five different congressional districts

. While federal entities cannot apply directly, they are encouraged to collaborate with eligible organizations to support program delivery.

           What You Can Actually Fund

One of the strongest aspects of this grant is its flexibility. Approved programs can allocate funding across a wide range of activities that directly support athlete experience and program sustainability.

This includes instruction, training, and competition, as well as more operational components like program coordination, athlete assessment, and classification. Funding can also support equipment, supplies, and program evaluation, along with sport-specific training and local program development. For organizations looking to build or refine their infrastructure, this creates real opportunity to strengthen both delivery and long-term impact.

Why This Funding Matters

Adaptive sports continue to play a critical role in supporting Veterans’ physical and mental health, offering structured pathways for recovery, connection, and personal achievement. As demand grows, so does the need for well-resourced programs that can deliver consistent, high-quality experiences.

This funding helps bridge that gap, enabling organizations to expand access, improve programming, and ultimately create more inclusive environments where Veterans can thrive through sport.

Early preparation is strongly encouraged, particularly for organizations coordinating partnerships or multi-location programs.

Event Spotlight: Who’s Hosting Big Right Now

In today’s competitive sports tourism environment, winning a bid increasingly requires more than venue availability and hotel capacity. Rights holders are placing greater emphasis on alignment: alignment between event mission and destination identity, between community culture and athlete experience and between operational capability and long-term impact.

While infrastructure remains foundational, industry observers note a broader evolution: destinations that articulate who they are, and demonstrate how that identity enhances the event, are distinguishing themselves in crowded bid fields.

Three destinations illustrate how this shift is playing out across very different tiers of sport:

Greensboro, North Carolina, host of the 2026 Lewis–Bethel Invitational

Buffalo, New York, host of the NHL Draft

Tucson, Arizona, host of ASANA in partnership with Tucson Inferno Pride

Each represents a different event scale and audience. Yet all three reflect a common strategic principle: identity is not supplemental to the bid, it is central to it.

A Tournament Town with Deep Women’s Sports Roots

Greensboro has long carried the moniker “Tournament Town,” a reference to its sustained history of hosting collegiate championships and major competitions. The Greensboro Coliseum, in particular, is widely associated with women’s basketball, having hosted more ACC Women’s Basketball championships than any other venue and serving as the spiritual home of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament.

The city is also home to UNCG and Bennett College. Bennett’s Bennett Belles played a documented role in the Civil Rights Movement, contributing to Greensboro’s broader legacy of women’s leadership and activism. That historical throughline — from civil rights to contemporary leadership — continues to shape the city’s civic identity.

Greensboro’s alignment with women-centered initiatives extends beyond athletics. The Women’s Only 5K supporting breast cancer advocacy, a high concentration of women-owned businesses, and the retail presence along Elm Street reinforce an ecosystem that elevates women’s participation and entrepreneurship.

Against that backdrop, Greensboro was awarded the 2026 Lewis–Bethel Invitational.

"Our team in Greensboro, North Carolina is proud to be the home of the 2026 Lewis-Bethel Invitational. We are grateful to Mashonda and her network for their trust, and we look forward to a partnership that leaves a meaningful, lasting impact for both the traveling athletes and the entire Greensboro community." -Caleb

Why Greensboro Is Winning

From a competitive bidding perspective, Greensboro’s strength lies in congruence. The mission of a women’s event finds authentic resonance in a city that has repeatedly demonstrated leadership in hosting women’s championships.

Rather than positioning itself as simply “available,” Greensboro offers narrative alignment:

A venue synonymous with women’s collegiate competition

Institutions with histories of women’s advocacy

A civic culture that foregrounds women-owned businesses and leadership

A downtown retail environment conducive to athlete and visitor engagement

This layered identity likely strengthens bid positioning by reducing perceived risk for rights holders. When event themes mirror destination values, activation becomes more organic, and stakeholder buy-in becomes easier to mobilize.

           Activation Beyond the Venue

Greensboro’s competitive advantage extends beyond the arena footprint. The city’s concentration of women-owned businesses presents partnership and storytelling opportunities that can enhance athlete and attendee experience. Elm Street boutiques provide a walkable retail corridor that supports visitor dwell time.

Additionally, the city’s history — particularly Bennett College’s Civil Rights legacy — creates opportunities for educational programming, community engagement initiatives, or athlete storytelling activations that deepen the event’s resonance beyond competition. Such activation strategies are increasingly relevant in women’s sports tourism, where community integration often plays a central role in event experience design.

           What Other Cities Can Learn

Greensboro demonstrates that historical credibility matters. Cities cannot fabricate decades of women’s sports hosting, but they can inventory authentic assets that align with event missions.

           Key lessons include:

Lead with identity, not just infrastructure.

Demonstrate historical continuity, not one-off support.

Build activation pathways through existing community strengths.

For destinations seeking to attract women-centered events, Greensboro offers a template: align event purpose with civic character, and operational capacity becomes part of a larger narrative.

A Hockey City on a National Stage

Buffalo’s selection as host of the NHL Draft signals more than logistical competence. As home of the Buffalo Sabres, the city possesses deep hockey culture and a generational fan base.

Professional league events such as the NHL Draft require ecosystem readiness: broadcast infrastructure, security coordination, municipal support, hotel inventory, sponsor staging capacity, and integrated transportation planning. They also demand an atmosphere that translates well on national and international media platforms.

Buffalo’s downtown footprint supports citywide activation, allowing fan festivals, sponsor activations, hospitality programming, and media staging to extend beyond a single venue.

           What Hosting Signals

Hosting a major pro league event communicates credibility. It signals that a destination can manage:

            High-security requirements

            Global media operations

            Sponsor expectations at national scale

            Complex municipal coordination

While infrastructure is foundational, authenticity plays a decisive role. Buffalo is not attempting to “become” a hockey city for a weekend — it already is one.

In competitive bidding, that authenticity reduces friction. Rights holders can trust that attendance, energy, and local engagement will materialize organically rather than requiring artificial stimulation.

           Activation Beyond the Arena

The NHL Draft is not simply a stage event; it is a content engine. Buffalo’s ability to activate across downtown — with fan zones, hospitality environments, sponsor activations, and media programming — transforms the event into a multi-day citywide experience.

Collaboration between the team, venue, DMO, and city leadership is central. Professional league events often hinge on unified civic execution. Buffalo’s established hockey ecosystem provides natural alignment among stakeholders.

The city’s walkable downtown core supports visitor mobility between activations, enhancing sponsor exposure and extending economic impact beyond the primary venue.

           Why Buffalo Is Winning

Buffalo’s bid strength likely stems from three intersecting factors:

Cultural authenticity — a deep hockey identity

Operational readiness — infrastructure capable of national broadcast standards

Coordinated leadership — collaboration among team, DMO, and municipal partners

For pro leagues, reputation risk is significant. Selecting a host with proven sports culture reduces uncertainty.

           What Other Cities Can Learn

Not every destination can replicate Buffalo’s hockey legacy. However, cities can evaluate where their authentic sports culture aligns with professional league opportunities.

Authenticity cannot be manufactured at bid stage; it must be cultivated over time.

            Downtown integration enhances media storytelling.

            Cross-sector alignment strengthens competitive positioning.

Buffalo illustrates that cultural depth amplifies operational capacity.

           Inclusion as Civic Identity

Tucson’s selection as host of ASANA, in partnership with Tucson Inferno Pride, reflects a destination strategy that extends beyond facilities and into civic culture. While many cities highlight inclusion during bid cycles, Tucson presents it as an ongoing community characteristic rather than an event-specific initiative.

The city’s reputation has been shaped by independent business ownership, creative communities, and neighborhood-based gathering spaces. Women- and queer-owned businesses operate across multiple corridors rather than within a single designated district. Social organizations and nonprofits provide community infrastructure that exists year-round. Municipal leadership also reflects demographic diversity, with the current council described as the most diverse in Tucson’s history.

In 2025, Tucson scored 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Municipal Equality Index, which evaluates how inclusive a city’s municipal laws, policies, and services are for LGBTQ residents and workers. That measurable policy framework adds structural reinforcement to the city’s community narrative.

As described by Bree Lopez, Visit Tucson's Sports Sales Manager:

"Tucson has long been a city built by and for misfits and people who refused to be “othered.” Our community thrives on unity through differences. In 2025 Tucson scored 100/100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Municipal Equality Index... Through our partnership with Tucson Inferno Pride and ASANA, we are proud to support an event that highlights elite competition while creating a memorable experience for athletes, families, and spectators."

The throughline is clear: inclusion is positioned not as programming, but as environment.

           Why Tucson Is Winning

For rights holders organizing women’s and LGBTQ+ events, host selection increasingly involves evaluating the broader setting — not just venue quality, but policy alignment, civic tone, and community readiness.

Tucson’s competitive advantage lies in demonstrable consistency. The Municipal Equality Index score provides external validation. The composition of city leadership reinforces representation in governance. Partnerships such as the one with Tucson Inferno Pride signal that collaboration extends beyond the sports sector.

Notably, Tucson does not rely on a centralized “gayborhood” model. Inclusive businesses and gathering spaces are distributed throughout the city. From a bid standpoint, that decentralization expands activation possibilities while reinforcing that welcome is not confined to a single district.

           Activation Beyond the Venue

ASANA’s footprint is positioned to extend into local businesses, nonprofit spaces, and community venues. Women- and queer-owned establishments provide natural gathering points for hospitality events, meetups, and cultural programming.

This distributed activation model allows athletes and families to engage with the city more broadly, rather than remaining within a controlled event perimeter. From a strategic perspective, that integration supports comfort, visibility, and connection. Factors that can influence how rights holders evaluate host environments, particularly for communities that have not always felt equally represented in sport.

           What Other Cities Can Learn

Tucson offers several practical insights for destinations pursuing similar events:

            Policy alignment strengthens competitive positioning.

Community partnerships must exist before the bid — not emerge during it.

Inclusion is more persuasive when it is embedded across neighborhoods and business sectors.

The Bigger Picture: Identity as Strategy

Greensboro, Buffalo, and Tucson operate at different scales. One hosts a women’s invitational with deep historical resonance. One hosts a globally televised professional draft. One hosts a women’s and LGBTQ+ championship rooted in community partnership.

Yet the pattern is consistent: Infrastructure enables hosting, alignment wins bids.

For destinations competing in today’s market, three strategic themes stand out:

            Identity is an asset.

Cities that understand their own story can position it effectively.

            Community activation matters.

Events are evaluated by how they integrate locally, not just how they perform on the court or ice.

            Support systems influence selection.

Policies, partnerships, and cultural context increasingly shape decision-making.

For Compete’s audience these examples reinforce a core truth: sport thrives when communities see themselves reflected in it.

The evolution of sports tourism may not hinge solely on who can build the largest venue or offer the biggest incentive package. It may increasingly depend on who can demonstrate a genuine connection between sport and people. In that sense, the destinations hosting big right now are not just staging events. They are staging belonging.

Sunshine Cup Returns This Weekend, Celebrating 15 Years of LGBTQ+ Flag Football and Impacting the Fort Lauderdale Business Community

The Sunshine Cup returns to South Florida this weekend, marking its 15th year as one of the longest-running and most respected LGBTQ+ flag football tournaments in the country. Held over Presidents Day Weekend, February 14–15, the event brings teams, fans, and visitors to Fort Lauderdale, where competitive sport, community, and tourism intersect.

Games will take place at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium, drawing athletes from across the region for a full weekend of fast-paced flag football. Featuring multiple divisions and a packed schedule, the Sunshine Cup delivers high-level competition while maintaining the inclusive, welcoming atmosphere that has defined the tournament since its earliest years.

Over the past decade and a half, the Sunshine Cup has evolved into far more than a sporting event. It has become a reliable driver of sports tourism, generating substantial hotel room nights and direct economic impact for the Fort Lauderdale business community. Teams and spectators traveling from outside the area contribute to increased demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation services, retail, and local entertainment venues throughout the weekend.

For Florida tourism, the Sunshine Cup highlights the state’s growing reputation as a destination for inclusive sporting events. Many participants extend their stays beyond the tournament, further amplifying the economic benefit while experiencing South Florida’s beaches, dining, nightlife, and cultural attractions. This combination of athletic competition and destination appeal makes the Sunshine Cup a valuable asset for the local economy.

On the field, the action is expected to be intense, with experienced teams and emerging programs competing for Sunshine Cup titles. The level of play continues to rise each year, reflecting the broader growth of LGBTQ+ flag football nationwide and the role tournaments like the Sunshine Cup play in elevating the sport.

Off the field, the tournament remains a cornerstone of community connection. For many athletes, the Sunshine Cup offers a space to compete openly and authentically, fostering camaraderie and confidence that extends well beyond the final whistle. That sense of belonging is a key reason the event has endured for 15 years and continues to attract new teams and returning participants alike.

As the Sunshine Cup celebrates this milestone year, it stands as a model for how inclusive sports can succeed long-term—delivering competitive excellence, strengthening community ties, and producing meaningful economic benefits for host cities.

When the final games conclude on Sunday, champions will be crowned. But the broader impact will be felt throughout Fort Lauderdale, where the Sunshine Cup once again demonstrates the power of sports to bring people together while supporting local businesses and tourism.

Compete Sports Network Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is an opportunity not just to celebrate progress, but to recognize the individuals and organizations who have worked—often quietly and persistently—to expand access, visibility, and opportunity for women in sports.

At Compete Sports Network, this day holds particular meaning. Since our founding in 2006, our work has been shaped and strengthened by women who believed in the power of sport as a platform for leadership, equity, and community long before it was widely embraced.

From the beginning, Compete benefited from the guidance and support of iconic women who helped define what inclusive sports leadership could look like. Trailblazers such as coach and sports advocate Helen Carroll, college basketball legend Dora Dome, and sports author and columnist Patricia Nell Warren lent not only their names, but their voices, credibility, and lived experience to our early work. Their influence helped establish Compete as an organization committed to representation, opportunity, and long-term impact.

Over the years, we have continued to collaborate with women leaders across a wide range of sports and disciplines. These include Judith Dea, President of USA Korfball; Andrea Snead of the United States Tennis Association; and tennis icon Billie Jean King, whose lifelong advocacy for equality has reshaped the global sports landscape. Each partnership reinforced the importance of leadership that is principled, persistent, and inclusive.

Within our own organization, women have played central roles in shaping Compete’s editorial voice and strategic direction. Although our Editor Emerita, Connie Wardman, retired last year after nearly two decades in sports media, her influence continues. She remains a trusted mentor and advisor to our team, offering guidance that reflects both experience and a deep commitment to elevating underrepresented stories in sport.

We are also proud of our partnership with the Lynn Lewis Foundation, with whom Compete co-founded the Compete Women’s Sports Council. This collaborative initiative was created to bring together leaders across sports, tourism, and business to develop sustainable opportunities for women’s athletics. The Council is currently working on the development of a women-focused sports tournament in Florida, designed to spotlight women athletes while creating meaningful economic and community impact.

Beyond athletes and media leaders, women are also driving change in sports tourism and event leadership—an often overlooked but critical sector of the industry. Professionals such as Nicole Goddeyne of Northstar Meetings Group and Breanna Martinez of Corpus Christi Sports Tourism work tirelessly to host women-led events, support emerging leaders, and create pathways for women to thrive behind the scenes. Their work ensures that women are not only competing on the field, but shaping the infrastructure that supports sport itself.

We are also deeply grateful for our partnerships with organizations dedicated to advancing women in sport, including USA Catchball and the Black Volleyball Circuit. Each of these organizations plays a vital role in fostering participation, leadership development, and community for women and girls at every level.

While it is impossible to name every remarkable woman who has influenced our journey, we want to acknowledge the countless athletes, administrators, coaches, volunteers, executives, and advocates whose impact may not always be visible, but is deeply felt. Their dedication—often behind the scenes—has helped move women’s sports forward in ways both large and small.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day reminds us that progress is rarely the result of a single moment. It is built by trailblazers, mentors, advocates, and organizers who show up year after year to push the industry forward. At Compete Sports Network, we are honored to stand alongside these leaders—and committed to continuing the work they helped inspire.

On January 15th, the glamour and excitement of awards season came to the world of sports as athletes, fans, and organizations gathered at the iconic Flamingo Las Vegas to celebrate the very best in welcoming sports. The festivities were part of the annual Sin City Classic Sports Festival, and the energy in the room made it clear — this is an event that's quickly becoming one of the most anticipated nights on the sports calendar.

Hosted by the charismatic Rob Tanis-Evon, the evening was a celebration of the people and organizations quietly — and not so quietly — making a difference in sports communities across the country.

The night kicked off with Visit Greater Palm Springs taking home the prestigious Event of the Year Award, recognizing the city's outstanding commitment to hosting world-class sporting events. Kevin McReynolds, Jr. was honored with the Community All-Star Award, a testament to his dedication to giving back. The Rise and Dream Foundation earned the Beacon Award, shining a light on their inspiring mission to uplift communities through sport.

The Sports Tourism MVP award saw triple the recognition this year, with Mallory Williams, Nicole Goddeyne, and Brandon Benson each earning the honor for their remarkable contributions to bringing sporting events — and the economic and cultural boost that comes with them — to their communities.

Perhaps the most solemn and inspiring moment of the evening came with the induction of three new members into the Hall of Legends: Chucking Browning, Mark Chambers, and Vincent Fuqua. Each inductee represents a legacy of dedication, perseverance, and passion for the game — a reminder that greatness comes in many forms.

In August 2026, Compete Sports Network will debut its Adaptive Sports Summit in Fort Wayne, Indiana, launching a new national gathering designed to elevate competitive opportunities for adaptive athletes and the organizations that serve them.

Presented in partnership with Visit Fort Wayne, the three-day Summit will bring together sports organizations, travel and tourism partners, corporate partners, and community stakeholders focused on building dedicated adaptive sporting events or integrating adaptive divisions into traditional tournaments. The Summit is intentionally focused and highly collaborative, creating space for meaningful conversation, shared learning, and strategic growth.

Fort Wayne was selected as the host city because of its long-standing commitment to adaptive and inclusive sport. The community has built a strong reputation for supporting adaptive athletes through intentional facility development, deep local partnerships, and a proven ability to host high-quality competitive events. Fort Wayne’s approach goes beyond accommodation—it reflects a genuine investment in creating environments where adaptive sports can thrive.

Visit Fort Wayne’s long-term commitment to accessibility and inclusion is rooted in its 10-year Tourism Master Plan, which identifies accessibility as a foundational priority. A key product-development goal of the plan is to position Fort Wayne and Allen County as a premier accessible destination. To advance this vision, Visit Fort Wayne launched a comprehensive accessibility initiative, including a task force of community leaders and advocates who guide a community-driven strategy focused on more accessible venues, universal design, and inclusive tourism amenities. These coordinated efforts ensure that Fort Wayne’s sports-tourism infrastructure and event planning intentionally support athletes of all abilities. This intentional approach elevates the overall experience for visiting athletes and attendees and strengthens Fort Wayne and Allen County’s reputation as a welcoming, accessible destination.

That philosophy aligns closely with Compete Sports Network’s Sports For All™ mission. Compete supports sports at every level—from grassroots and community-based programs to national and elite competition—and works across the sports ecosystem to help organizers, destinations, and partners build events that are both impactful and sustainable. The Adaptive Sports Summit represents a natural extension of that mission, ensuring adaptive sports remain fully integrated into the broader sports industry landscape.

Throughout the Summit, participating organizations will explore practical strategies for growing adaptive competition, strengthening event operations, and expanding participation. Discussions will center on scaling events responsibly, incorporating adaptive divisions into existing tournaments, and building partnerships that support athletes before, during, and after competition.

By pairing Compete Sports Network’s national platform with Fort Wayne’s demonstrated leadership in adaptive sports, the Adaptive Sports Summit aims to set a new standard for how destinations and organizers collaborate to advance inclusive competition.

In 2026, Compete enters its twentieth year — not just a marker of time, but a testament to two decades of elevating athletes and communities whose stories once lived in the margins.

Compete was born in 2006 at the Bingham Cup in New York City, a moment when LGBTQ+ athletes were competing yet had almost no media platform of their own. What began as Sports Out Loud, the world’s first gay sports magazine, quickly grew into a movement rooted in visibility, equity, and the belief that sports are for everyone. Today, Compete Sports Network connects athletes, sports organizations, tourism partners, corporate partners and community organizations across the country — all under the banner of Sports For All™. And Sports For All™ is all encompassing, and includes you!

Compete Sports Network Enters Its 20th Year: A Legacy Built on Sports, Community & Impact

In May 2006, a bold idea took shape on a rugby pitch in New York City. At the Bingham Cup—gay rugby’s equivalent of the Rugby World Cup—we introduced the world to Sports Out Loud Magazine, the first and only gay sports magazine in existence at the time. With a simple but ambitious vision—“To Unite the World Through Sports”—we set out to tell the stories no one else was telling.

Not the stories of celebrity athletes.

Not the stories confined to box scores.

But the stories of everyday competitors—their grit, their dreams, their victories on and off the field. We believed then, as we do now, that sports have the extraordinary power to bring people together, create belonging, and elevate voices that deserve to be heard.

What began as a print magazine has evolved into a comprehensive, multi-platform sports network. Today, Compete Sports Network serves as a bridge connecting:

Entering Our 20th Year: A Milestone Worth Celebrating

As we step into our 20th year—not just marking an anniversary, but actively beginning our next chapter—we do so with gratitude, pride, and clarity of purpose.

Twenty years represents far more than time passed. It represents the athletes we’ve profiled, the organizations we’ve supported, the events we’ve powered, and the relationships that have carried us forward.

It represents resilience—through industry changes, economic shifts, and global challenges. It represents leadership—showing what is possible when sports and inclusion move hand in hand. And it represents the remarkable community that stands with us.

Thank You to Our Partners, Friends, and Supporters

None of this would have been possible without the sports organizations, DMOs, tourism leaders, corporate partners, and community advocates who believed in our mission.

Your collaboration, your trust, and your commitment have helped transform a magazine into a movement.

           The Next Chapter Begins Now

As we enter our 20th year, we’re not looking backward—we’re building forward. Watch for new initiatives, expanded partnerships, and a renewed commitment to our founding vision:

This year, Las Vegas becomes the epicenter of inclusive sports when thousands of athletes and fans gather for the Sin City Classic. In 2026, Compete Sports Network is turning up the volume with the Winter Sports Business Conference, happening January 14–20, 2026 — a full week designed to help you connect, collaborate, and grow your sports organization or brand.

This isn’t your typical conference. It’s where sports meets purpose, and where genuine relationships lead to real business.

           Why This Conference Matters

If you work in sports, tourism, corporate or community engagement, you already know that relationships drive everything. The Compete Winter Sports Business Conference brings together sports organizers, tourism pros, corporate partners, community leaders, and small business owners who believe in growing their organization.

This year marks Compete’s sixth consecutive time returning to Las Vegas, but it’s the first year partnering with the Sports Philanthropy Network, adding even more depth to the conversations around purpose-driven sports and business growth.

           What to Expect

Things kick off Wednesday night with a Welcome Reception—a casual networking event that sets the tone for the week. Thursday is packed with sessions, business building opportunities, and conversations around:

When the TEAMS ’25 Conference convened this October at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, the spotlight shined on a leader who’s spent his career proving that inclusion isn’t just good business — it’s essential business.

Dr. William “Bill” Kapfer, global head of supplier diversity ,community engagement at JPMorganChase, was honored as the 2025 Compete Sports Network Person of the Year, presented in partnership with Northstar Meetings Group and American Exchange. The award recognized a lifetime of work dedicated to creating opportunity, access and equality across both business and sport — values that lie at the heart of Compete Sports Network’s mission of Sports For All™.

For more than a decade, Kapfer has been one of corporate America’s most effective advocates for supplier inclusion.

At JPMorganChase, he leads a global strategy that brings the firm together with business and community organizations that ensure small businesses and women-, minority-, veteran-, LGBTQ-, and disability-owned businesses have meaningful opportunities to participate in the company’s multibillion-dollar supply chain.

Under his leadership, the firm became the 28th member of the Billion Dollar Roundtable, a network of corporations dedicated to driving supply chain excellence by leading, influencing and setting the standard for supplier inclusion globally.

“Representation in sports and business is about more than participation — it’s about belonging,” Kapfer says. “When brands invest in inclusion, they invest in the future of sport itself.”

Kapfer’s philosophy is deeply personal. Growing up in Warwick, New York, he learned the principles of inclusion and respect while helping in his grandfather’s grocery store. “It taught me that business works best when everyone feels valued,” he recalls.

That early lesson evolved into a remarkable career. After earning a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Northern Arizona University, Kapfer spent more than two decades in publishing and media, holding leadership roles with American Express Publishing, Hearst and Condé Nast. His ability to merge storytelling with purpose helped brands communicate inclusion long before it became a corporate imperative.

Kapfer’s influence extends beyond boardrooms and balance sheets. In 2012, he helped Lexus become one of the first national brands to sponsor inclusive sporting events, a groundbreaking move that opened the door for corporate partnerships with organizations such as the Sin City Classic and the Gay Polo League. Those relationships have endured for more than a decade, helping create sports spaces that are not only welcoming but genuinely representative of the world we live in.

“Dr. Kapfer’s leadership demonstrates how inclusion can shape industries, inspire communities and transform the business of sport,” says Eric Carlyle, SDLT, founder and CEO of Compete Sports Network. “His work reminds us that Sports For All™ isn’t just a vision — it’s a shared responsibility across every level of sport and society.”

The Compete Sports Network Person of the Year Award, powered by Northstar Meetings Group and American Exchange, was presented to Kapfer on Oct. 15, 2025, at TEAMS ’25 by Clay Dickey, founder of the Black Softball Circuit. Following the award ceremony, Compete Sports Network Sports Organizers celebrated at the Rocky Mountain Collective Rooftop Party, where industry leaders gathered to honor Kapfer’s ongoing work to expand opportunity in both business and sports.

For Kapfer, inclusion isn’t a chapter in his story — it’s the narrative that connects them all. From his family’s grocery store to one of the world’s largest financial institutions, he’s built a career on the belief that access changes everything.

As he accepted Compete Sports Network’s highest honor, his message to the industry is simple and powerful: progress isn’t about who gets invited — it’s about who gets empowered.

And in that sense, the business of belonging has never looked brighter.

For many adult athletes, competition day doesn’t just start on game day. It starts days earlier— juggling work deadlines, family commitments, and the inevitable curveballs life throws our way. Those responsibilities don’t disappear when it’s time to compete, and the mental weight they carry can spill over into performance, fueling anxiety and making it harder to focus. The good news? You can’t stop life from being busy, but you can learn to shift your attention toward what you can control—on and off the field—so you show up ready, composed, and confident.

The Link Between Life Stress and Performance Anxiety

Adult athletes face a unique challenge: sport is a passion, not a paycheck. That means you’re competing because you love it—but you also have a full life outside of it. When your mind is overloaded with work meetings, relationship issues, or personal responsibilities, it’s easy for those thoughts to linger as you step into competition.

This mental “carryover effect” blurs the line between everyday stress and game-day focus.

           You might find yourself:

           •Overthinking every play or movement

•Feeling unusually tense or jittery before a game

•Losing confidence in situations you normally handle well

•Struggling to stay present and react quickly.

Performance anxiety in these moments isn’t just about the game—it’s about being overloaded mentally and trying to do too much at once.

Why Controllables Matter

The fastest way to free your mind from unnecessary pressure is to separate what you can control from what you can’t.

Controllables are the elements you directly influence:

•Effort you put into each play

           •Your preparation before the game

•How you communicate with teammates and coaches

•Your body language and energy level

           •Your focus in the moment

Uncontrollables are everything else:

           • Your opponent’s skill level

           • Weather conditions

           • Umpires, coaches and players actions

           • Spectator behavior

           • Unexpected life disruptions before the game.

Focusing on controllables isn’t about ignoring reality, it’s about making sure your energy is spent where it counts. The more you anchor your attention to what you can influence, the less mental space you give to things that drain focus and confidence.

Life stress is part of being an adult athlete. But performance anxiety doesn’t have to control the way you compete. By focusing on the controllables—your effort, preparation, mindset, and presence—you create a mental buffer between outside-life challenges and your ability to perform.

Compete Celebrates Women Trailblazers in Sports

As we gear up for the 2025 Compete Women's Leadership Summit on October 8-9 in Wesley Chaple, we want to recognize the achievements and contributions of women athletes throughout history. To say that women have faced immense challenges in the world of sports hardly begins to describe it.

From being barred from competition to battling for equal playing space and equipment to equal television rights and equal pay – it’s been a long battle for true recognition. Yet in spite of these obstacles, female athletes have broken records, shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations of girls and women athletes.

One of these pioneers was Wilma Rudolph, who overcame polio as a child to become the first American woman to win three gold medals in track and field at the 1960 Olympic Games held in Rome. Her dominance on the track inspired countless young girls to pursue athletics.

Another pioneer is Billie Jean King who single handedly has changed the face of women’s tennis in particular and women’s sports in general. Some may only remember her 1973 victory over Bobby Riggs in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match, proving that women players were as good or better than the men and deserved equal prize money. In 1974 she founded the Women’s Sports Foundation that advocates for girls and women in sports through a number of avenues, including research, financial assistance to aspiring female athletes and opportunities for both girls and women to participate in sports.

The fight for equality in sports has extended beyond individual and team performances, however. The big gamechanger has been the passage of Title IX in 1972. Although part of the Higher Education Act, the 37 word amendment to it written by Senator Birch Bayh mandated equal opportunities for women in federally-funded sports programs. This led to a surge in female participation in high school and college athletics, creating opportunities for women to compete at elite levels.

Today’s female athletes continue to break barriers. Serena Williams has redefined tennis with her power and dominance, Simone Biles has set new records in gymnastics and women’s soccer teams worldwide have finally won equal pay and respect. This last accomplishment is thanks primarily to players Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo and Becky Sauerbrunn from the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team who were at the forefront of this battle in 1922. Success on the soccer field now means equal compensation and respect for women players.

Athletes aren’t the only (s)heros in this trailblazing mix. It also includes women in sports tourism and sports organizers who have played a crucial role in shaping the industry and expanding opportunities for female competitors. Women like Marynka Rojas Gorgen, SDL from Paradragons USA and Luchie Javelosa, SDLT with Tempe Tourism Office are two who are driving the sports tourism industry and helping to create opportunities that further women’s sports.

Women’s History isn’t only about celebrating the past; it’s also about recognizing the ongoing journey toward equality. As we honor the pioneer women who paved the way, we are also looking forward to a future where women in sports worldwide are recognized, respected and given the same opportunities as their male counterparts – ultimately, it’s about reaching equity.

Let’s celebrate the perseverance, strength and achievements of women in all areas of sports, acknowledging that their personal victories are gratefully appreciated by all the girls and women who are following in their footsteps.

A state-of-the-art convention center delivers 30,000 square feet of contiguous space and features 92,000 total sq ft of flexible meeting space across the campus, backed by three hotels providing over 400 rooms. For event organizers, Dillard promises exceptional support throughout the process: "We want to know what went right, and if something went wrong, so we have feedback to prepare for the next successful event.” Her commitment to transparent communication and comprehensive event support has already attracted numerous sporting events to the region.

Known as the gem of eastern North Carolina, Greenville offers distinctive experiences that set it apart from typical tourist destinations.

In 2026, the vibrant city of València will host the Gay Games XII—an event that promises to be more than just a global sports competition. With its sun-drenched boulevards, world-class venues, and progressive spirit, València is preparing to welcome thousands of athletes, artists, and allies in a celebration of diversity, inclusion, and community.

We spoke with María Ángeles Vidal, Managing Director of the Fundación Deportiva Municipal de València, and Jon Landa Diestro, a volunteer specializing in promotion, culture, and communications, to get a glimpse of what makes the València edition so special.

           A City Ready to Shine

“Many things make València 2026 unique,” says Landa. “The city itself is a highlight—walkable, sunny, full of bike lanes, rich with history, and alive with street culture. You can enjoy the beach within minutes or relax in Europe’s longest urban park. And the food? Incredible and affordable.”

Vidal adds, “The Games will unfold across professional sports venues, all within a 10-kilometer radius. Our outdoor festival village and ceremonies will take place in unforgettable locations. This isn’t just a sports event—it’s a cultural celebration in a country that leads in LGBTIQ+ rights and knows how to enjoy life.”

Building Inclusion from the Ground Up

Inclusivity is the core principle of the Gay Games, and València 2026 will honor that tradition while taking it a step further.

“Everyone is welcome,” Landa affirms. “Some sports will be entirely open with no gender divisions. Others will offer ‘Women’ and ‘All Genders’ categories, where athletes compete in alignment with their gender identity—no questions asked, fully supported by Spanish law.”

Accessibility is also front of mind. Venues will be fully accessible, cultural events will feature subtitles or sign language interpretation, and considerations are being made for participants with autism, hearing impairments, or low vision. “Spain is advanced in this regard, and we’re building on that foundation,” Landa says.

A Lasting Legacy for LGBTIQ+ Sports

The impact of the Games will go far beyond the nine days of competition. “Local sports organizations are receiving education on LGBTIQ+ inclusion,” explains Vidal. “We’re upgrading facilities to be more inclusive not just for the event, but long into the future.”

Landa adds, “We hope this will be a rallying cry for LGBTIQ+ athletes, especially those who don’t have access to queer sports—maybe because they live in rural areas or don’t even know such communities exist. This is their invitation.”

Unified Support from Government and Community

An event of this scale requires more than enthusiasm—it requires commitment. “The València City Council has granted us access to venues across the city for over 39 sports and 10 cultural events,” says Vidal. “We’re also collaborating with AVEGAL, a local collective of LGBTIQ+ businesses, to ensure this event has a positive and lasting economic and cultural impact.”

Security and well-being are also top priorities. València 2026 will feature multilingual support staff, safety desks, all-gender restrooms, FLINTA* spaces, and inclusive changing rooms. Coaches and staff are being trained on inclusive language, pronouns, and how to handle LGBTIQ+-specific incidents.

           The Road to Registration

Registration is open and easy. “Just go to our website, click ‘Registration,’ and select your sport,” says Landa. “We’re especially encouraging women, trans, and non-binary athletes to sign up, and we’ve created a discount code to support them. But act fast—fees will rise.”

           What Awaits in València

Visitors can expect a warm welcome in a city that embraces both tradition and modernity. “This is a place where you can truly be yourself,” says Vidal. “With excellent public transport and miles of bike lanes, getting around is easy. And don’t leave without trying orxata, fresh local oranges, and of course, authentic paella—València is its birthplace.”

           New Sports and Old Traditions

València 2026 will debut padel and e-sports, and introduce local favorites like pilota Valenciana and colpbol through free workshops. “Some of the events—like quadball, soccer, and track & field—will take place in the city’s transformed riverbed park,” Landa explains. “It’s also where the Gay Games Village will be, nestled within the futuristic City of Arts and Sciences.”

The Games welcome all skill levels. “You don’t have to be a pro,” Landa emphasizes. “This is about participation, community, and joy. Yes, there are medals, but the true spirit of the Games is about showing up and having fun.”
Embracing Diversity and Visibility

València 2026 aims to be the most diverse Gay Games yet. “While cisgender men have traditionally been the majority, we’re working hard to change that,” says Landa. “We’ve implemented a 10% discount for FLINTA* athletes and are doing targeted outreach to underrepresented communities.”

FLINTA—an acronym widely used in Germany—stands for female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans, and agender individuals.

The Games are more than sport—they are an immersive cultural journey. “Your accreditation badge will give you access to exhibitions on local queer history, regional dance and music, and food and drink experiences,” says Vidal. “Expect Valencian classics like Falles, mascletàs, and traditional costume on display.”

There’s also a conference on breaking gender binaries in sports, art exhibitions, musical performances, and memorial quilt displays. “Fire and light—so central to Valencian identity—will be everywhere,” Landa adds.

The Gay Games play a powerful role in advancing LGBTIQ+ visibility worldwide. “They help athletes come out, connect, and compete with pride,” Landa says. “We may not legislate change, but we build community and create space for authenticity.”

The Federation of Gay Games has also partnered with global LGBTIQ+ organizations and corporate allies to fund ambassador programs, enabling underprivileged athletes—especially from Northern Africa this year—to attend and participate.

What does the future of LGBTIQ+ inclusion in sports look like? “Hopefully,” says Landa, “it’s a world where no one has to explain their identity just to play the sport they love. Until then, we need safe spaces like the Gay Games—and a broader cultural shift that brings inclusion into every locker room, team, and tournament.”

Trayer Martinez, SDLT, VP of Sports at Compete.

“Their presence in youth, collegiate, and recreational volleyball is already powerful. Our goal is to work alongside their leadership to help scale that impact even further across the sports landscape.”

The synergy between the two organizations was immediate. Compete’s mission—to connect, educate, empower, and inspire inclusive sports organizations—felt like a natural fit for BVC’s culturally rooted work.

For Speed, that alignment wasn’t just convenient. It was critical.

“Compete understands that access without cultural relevance isn’t really access at all,” she explains. “We’re not trying to fit into someone else’s system. We’re building our own system—with support from partners who value equity the way we do.”

The partnership opens new doors for BVC—more cities, more events, more exposure for athletes who are often overlooked in traditional volleyball spaces. And for Compete, it reinforces a commitment to partnering with organizations that lead with heart, purpose, and authenticity.

As the two organizations look ahead, the vision is clear: a volleyball community where every athlete feels seen, supported, and celebrated.

“We’re just getting started,” says Speed, smiling. “But with Compete in our corner, the future feels wide open.”

What began as a niche voice for LGBTQ+ athletes and sports inclusion has, over the past two decades, grown into a national movement. Now, as we enter our 20th year this August, we look back with pride and forward with purpose. Today, Compete Sports Diversity is stepping into a new era—with a new name:

           Compete Sports Network.

The rebrand, announced this week, represents more than a name change. It’s a declaration of the organization’s growth and a signal of our evolving role as a major player in the world of welcoming sports media and marketing.

From the start, Compete was created to uplift athletes often left on the sidelines. That mission expanded over time to include adaptive athletes, women’s sports advocates, seniors, minority-led leagues, and tourism partners looking to tap into the inclusive sports space.
