It’s Championship Season in the world of gay sports. Since Memorial Day Weekend, when NAGVA crowned its champs in volleyball, we’ve witnessed the ultimate tournaments in rugby and softball, made it through another successful Gay Games, and now we prepare for the flag football contest to end all others.
In this month's issue of Compete, we are featuring softball and football – one sport that lays claim to the largest annual gathering of competitors in the gay sports world, and another that is exploding to become one of the most popular sports in our community.
I attended the Gay Softball World Series in Columbus, Ohio, in August. I was amazed at how smoothly and professionally it was run, and how much fun everyone was having. This was a drama-free tournament (off-the-field, that is; the brackets contained plenty of drama!) from beginning to end. to all the teams that placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd at the GSWS; for that matter, I think it’s important to congratulate all the teams that had qualified and swung their hearts out in Columbus. Job well done!
This month I am excited to be able to watch Gay Bowl X from beginning to end. (It helps that it is being hosted by my hometown Phoenix Hellraisers.) The best gay football teams from across the country are guaranteeing nail-biting competition. And the Gay Bowl organizing committee is guaranteeing a week the players will not forget.
Another champion we are thrilled to feature in this issue is Golden Gloves boxer Nicole Dean. Compete writer Heather Robinson interviewed the diminutive fighter, who has many more promising years ahead of her.
Be sure to pick up this month's issue to also check out a couple of our newest columns – Scouting Report and Sports Yearbook. These are fun features we think make for an even more exciting, diverse magazine. And don’t be surprised if you continue to notice changes in upcoming issues. We’re always striving to be the best!
