Volume 4 Issue 2

Actor, model and novelist Ben Patrick Johnson highlights the March issue. The Hollywood king of voice-overs is currently promoting his latest novel, If The Rains Don't Cleanse. Learn more about how the GLBT sports community was hit hard recently, as both the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the Women's Sports Foundation eliminated important gay sports advocacy positions. Patricia Nell Warren also returns to this issue with an important "All Out" column, writing about the new homophobia in sports: the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) are aiming to keep sports in the U.S. and around the world gay-unfriendly.

Sports advocacy gets hit hard

Two high-profile positions are abolished

Thumbnail for gay sports advocacy articleThe future of advocating for LGBT equality in sports looks uncertain these days after the recent elimination of two sports-advocacy-specific programs. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) shelved its sports desk in January and the nonprofit Women’s Sports Foundation eliminated the It Takes A Team Education Campaign for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues in Sports this past December.

The Newer, Uglier Face of Homophobia in Sports

GLAAD award nominations were top-heavy with sports coverage. Among the nominations was the Brian Sims* story run by Outsports – a heartwarming profile of a college football player whose coming-out courage was actually acclaimed by his teammates, coach and school. In pro sports, UK rugby player Gareth Thomas did the highest-profile coming-out to date.
