Every four years something remarkable happens. Thousands of gay athletes from dozens of nations around the world gather to compete in their chosen sports in the Gay Games. It’s been nearly 30 years since Tom Waddell founded the Games, which are stronger and more popular than ever. We are proud to be a partner of the Games this year
, which kick off at the end of the month in Cologne, Germany. In this issue we profile several athletes from around North America who will be attending the Games, hoping to bring home gold.
Patricia Nell Warren’s column “All Out” is a special one this month. The award-winning writer looks at the subject of female athletes, and the pressure they sometimes feel to “prove” their femininity when they are off the field/court/diamond/whatever. I was happy to have two friends from Phoenix – Tami Bobst and Jojo Halko – pose for our cover and help us illustrate this intriguing story. (Special thanks to BS West in Scottsdale and Amsterdam in Phoenix for loaning us their star bartenders for this photo shoot.)
Some of you, however, may be holding a Compete with Mark Elledge on the cover. He is an athlete from Washington, D.C., a thriving market for our growing magazine. William Waybourn is the photographer, and his work will be appearing in many of our issues ahead. The two-cover concept is an experiment, and we’re anxious to know your thoughts! (E-mail

Also in this issue, we have coverage of two big gay sporting events: the annual NAGVA Championships and the bi-annual Bingham Cup. Compete is fortunate to have people from all over who step up to help us provide coverage of events like these. And in the coming months we will do the same for the Gay Softball World Series, Gay Bowl and the World Gay Rodeo Finals.
So when you want to know what is going on in the world of gay sports, it is clear that Compete is your number one source!
