The spotlight is on you

To print or not to print — that is the question. Occasionally, we are asked why we continue to print Compete in light of the many publications that are closing up shop. That is a good question, and we have a good answer.

We believe in what we do.

Making you, our reader, the star of Compete has been the focus of our magazine since its inception in 2006. In fact, at our very first meeting we made a commitment that our magazine would primarily focus on amateur sports.

Now, almost four years since that first meeting, the focus is still on amateur sports. We have featured some amazing professional athletes such as NFL star Bill Romanowski and NBA great John Amaechi, while the likes of Ian Roberts, Jackie Warner, and Esera Tualo have graced our cover. However, we’ve also featured amateur athletes such as the Phoenix Storm’s Tony Alonzo and the Shady Ladies’ own R.J. Guyer. We’ve even made cover models out of hometown heroes Jeff Kagan and John Deffee.

Our commitment to amateur athletes continues as we provide coverage of the 2010 Gay Games in Cologne, Germany, coverage of the 2010 Bingham Cup in Minneapolis, the 2010 NAGAAA World Series in Columbus, Ohio, The Hurricane Showdown in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and a host of other tournaments.

As amateur athletes garner the majority of our attention, we are also looking to bring you exciting stories from the world of college and professional sports, via the magazine and our newly re-designed and enhanced Web site.

Speaking of the Web site, community is often used when talking about gay sports and that is what we are building on our site — a gay sports community. Check it out at www.competemag.com/community

So, next time someone asks us why we continue to print Compete, we can smile broadly and honestly say — it’s for you, our reader.

Sincerely,
Eric Carlyle

Its refreshing to find a kick ass mag like this one for a change. Indeed there is all walks of life in the gay community that gets glamourized in the magazines, in which I do respect.....however, its all boring and tiresome. Its the same ol thing: unattainable, unrealistic guys shown in the (club/bar scene), then there's the Bear scene, guys whom are represented in magazines as what a real man should be???? WHAT A JOKE!!!! I have met so many of them in person, and what a dissapointment. Drag queens.....I cant find a decent comment to write, so Ill leave that alone.. They themselves speak for themselves. Its horrible. Anyhow, I enjoy your magazine and hope you keep up with the good work. Keep all that other FAKE stuff out and I believe you'll be around for a long time. Im sure there's people who probably will hate this comment, but deep down inside....They all agree AND need to get over themselves...smilies/smiley.gif
