MAGAZINE 2010 ISSUES April Issue 2010 Necessary Roughness

From the Editor: Buddy Early

We’re fun and serious

It isn’t often that we get to turn the spotlight on a health crisis affecting our community. Let’s be honest – Compete is mostly a feel-good magazine. Still, this month I am proud that we are discussing the seriousness of Hepatitis, especially since so many Compete readers are active in contact sports.

Hepatitis is not difficult to catch … but it’s also not difficult to prevent. Learn more (and read about our cover model and Hep Team member Huntley Woods) in this issue.

I may have mentioned before on this page that I love the Olympics. Summer AND Winter. If I had the resources I would take a sabbatical every two years to spend a few weeks at the site of that year’s Games. So naturally I am extremely jealous of Charley Walters and Tyler Duckworth: a couple of ‘mos who have attended the last two Olympics and kept a video blog of their adventures. Their site – www.OlympicsOrBust.com – doesn’t just let you follow the action and go behind-the-scenes, it lets you contribute to charity. Find out more about that in our Q&A with the duo.

And if anyone thinks Compete doesn’t cover ALL sports, simply read Heather Robinson’s story about bowling and the upcoming IGBO Championships. You may change your mind about whether or not bowling is, indeed, a sport.

Don’t forget that next month we release our annual Swimsuit Issue, featuring athletes from Las Vegas. We scoured Sin City for some great locations, and I can honestly say that this year’s Swimsuit feature is unlike any other!
