THE STAND UP WITH BEN COHEN BLOG

ben-cohen-compete-06-thHad a really busy day Sunday. The minute we landed in New York we were whisked off by our regular 'Get Services' driver, Weston and taken to a park somewhere (sorry to be vague) to film a piece for 'In The Life' for PBS. It is going to be shown in the autumn so we will give you a shout out when it comes out. The interview asked me lots of questions about StandUp and how we are going to combat bullying overall, as well as homophobic bullying. It’s a massive subject and one that we are passionate about getting to grips with as soon as possible.

Lots of people are asking us how they can get involved with the foundation so I thought I would suggest a few things.

StandUp is all about action. Not talk. So, here are some ways that we can all stand up and take action.

We will be supporting the existing organisations through our StandUp network so all your donations and money raised through the tour will be going to great causes already doing great work. As we grow, so will our network of beneficiaries. So we are always keen to raise more money to help that part.

However, there are other ways to stand up that we would like you to consider. Here are a few.

Make someone aware. Every day explain to at least one person that bullying is rife and needs to be stopped. Tell that person to make someone else aware.

Look out for the signs and step in if you see it happening.

Wear one of the StandUp bracelets and use it as a talking point to raise awareness. (They will soon be on sale online along with a whole range of merchandise to help spread the word)

Tell us your story – email the foundation if you have a story you feel may help and inspire others.

Change your profile picture to the StandUp logo at least one week out of four. (You can download one of the logos at the end of this post)

Join the Ben Cohen Fan Page and share my posts and tweets with everyone.

These are just a few ways that you can make a difference. We feel it is all about awareness to start with and then having the courage to speak out and stand up when you see someone being bullied.

We are looking forward to going into the schools in the future to take these messages to our youth – the decision makers of tomorrow.

So let us know what you have done to stand up! The more people that join in the more power the message has behind it.

Finally – a big thanks to the Gotham Knights who organised an excellent event at Boxers last night. Thanks Winston, Marcus, John, Michael (MC) and gang. We raised a fantastic amount of money for the foundation. Thanks to everyone who came. It was PACKED! Well done to everyone for a great event.

Great advice!
So often we let pass opportunities to correct people or educate them. Every time you sepak up, as insignificant as it may seem, can make a difference.

Have you looked into doing some work with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)? The SPLC is one of the most esteemed civil rights organizations in the US and they have recently tackled the issue of anti-gay bullying head-on. Last year they released a video entitled Bullied about the Jamie Nabozny case in Minnesota and yesterday they publicly threatened to sue a Minnesota school district if they did not stake steps to curtail harassment and bullying of gay students.

In the Life is a great show that has been produced for a long time. I'm really looking forward to this episode.

I STAND UP WITH BEN COHEN
I am passionate about standing up against homophobia and feel compelled to take action. It is time we stand up for what is right and support young people who are being harmed. As athletes, it is not enough just to have strong bodies. We must have strong characters and use our voices to support those who need and deserve it.

Every person on this planet has a right to be true to themselves, to love and be loved, and to be happy. I encourage others to stand up with me and make a difference. Stand up for equality, stand up against bullying.
