Gay men seeking a professional coach now have a new resource — a no-cost online directory of professional coaches who are also gay through The Gay Coaches Alliance’s (GCA) new website, www.thegaycoaches.com. The alliance also launched a new Facebook page to elevate coaching awareness and access within the gay community.
The new website adds to GCA’s growing support and developmental offerings for gay coaches, which includes a monthly professional development and networking teleconference and an international conference slated for 2012. Plus, the new website offers an active developmental forum for member coaches. Currently, there are 16 professional coaches from throughout North America listed in the GCA’s online directory, and the list continues to grow.
Formed more than two years ago, the GCA has a three-part mission – to promote the field of coaching, especially for gay men to find a gay coach; to support individual gay coaches to develop and sustain successful practices; and, to form a global community to develop a greater presence of gay coaches in the world.
Alliance co-founders Dave Allen, Michael Cohen and Harry Faddis – each a professional coach with many gay clients – first conceived of GCA after noting that gay men can especially benefit from working with a trained professional coach. They also realized that there were many gay men who were powerful coaches and many more gay men who could be excellent coaches, but there was no centralized specific support available. They shared a belief that gay men have unique needs when being coached, but neither coaching organizations nor training programs specifically addressed them adequately, if at all. So the GCA formed to help gay men find a coach as well as encouraging and developing gay men who are coaches.
Why a gay coach?
Trust is essential in any coaching relationship, enabling client and coach to speak freely and explore the client’s beliefs and dreams without fear of judgment. But trust is especially important for coaching gay men; finding others who are trustworthy has been a lifelong challenge for most gay men. Shared experience often helps build rapport and trust more quickly. “A lot of gay men have been wounded by the process of growing up gay and have been cut off from their power – to choose a good life, to be in satisfying relationships, to make the kind of impact they want to make in the world,” explained GCA co-founder Michael Cohen. “By working with a gay coach there is no ‘translation of culture’ necessary; it’s easier when the coach and client have a common frame of reference.”
The high-trust environment allows clients to be truly authentic in sharing dreams and desires – perhaps for the first time in their lives. Gay coaches can also be excellent guides for men who are questioning their sexual orientation or men who are in the process of “coming out.”
“Coaching with a gay coach can be especially effective for gay men who feel cut off and alienated from other successful and strong men,” said Dave Allen, a GCA co-founder. “Being really ‘heard’ and respected by another man creates an expansive field of opportunity. To have another man – his coach – stay and be an advocate, cheerleader and guide is potent when experience has taught gay men to hide who they really are or else risk abandonment.”
Coaching works
Coaching is effective in increasing personal satisfaction and effectiveness in many contexts of life – work, relationship, education, and life stage transitions. Coaching is convenient and portable, often done by telephone, a few sessions per month. It is effective one-on-one, as well as for couples, groups or teams.
Working with a professional coach can supercharge a client who feels “stuck” to make choices, take action and move in the direction of their dreams. Some common activities within a coaching session include asking powerful questions, identifying alternative perspectives, challenging limiting beliefs and concluding with the client’s commitment to take specific action to move them ahead. “Coaching is for people who want to change, who are motivated to change and who are willing to stay the course,” Faddis said. “I think every gay man could benefit from working with a coach.”
To join the GCA, coaches can apply on the website. There is a nominal quarterly membership fee for coach membership, which covers his listing and eligibility for GCA programs. There is no charge to use the directory to find a coach.

Some of you are aware Michael Holtz is Compete's 2010 Athlete of the Year.  He recently joined the running to compete in Mr. Gay World as Mr. Gay USA.  We received the following information regarding the competition:

The US arm of the Mr. Gay World competition recently named Michael Holtz as the winner of Mr. Gay USA, just in time for the online voting portion of the Mr. Gay World competition, which is taking place now, leading up to the main competition in the Philippines March 9-16, 2011.

Following a social media competition held via Twitter and Facebook in which entrants submitted videos to tell the world why they should be named Mr. Gay USA, a panel of judges held Skype interviews with the top finalists and ultimately awarded California resident, Michael Holtz, as the 2011 Mr. Gay USA.

“Michael Holtz was the perfect candidate for Mr. Gay USA, as he really knows what it means to use his ‘gay for good’”, commented Jarl Haugedal, founder of Mr. Gay USA, “outside of the impressive number of votes he drove to the social media competition in a short amount of time, he also amazed the judge panel.”

In his submission video Michael speaks about how after coming out, he combined his passion for swimming and support for the LGBT community by launching two of the first-ever, open-water, long-distance swims on both the East and West coasts of the United States to raise money for LGBT equality and benefitting not-for-profit organizations. Michael has made it his mission to be a positive influence for other gay athletes, as well as fight for equality for all.

“I am honored to represent my country as an ambassador and spokesperson for the LGBTQ community! The opportunity to tell my story and change the hearts and minds of individuals across the world has always been a mission of mine.” commented Holtz, “As an open athlete, I am focusing my life on using the medium of athletics to bring the world together to better understand, know about, and interact with the LGBT community in a positive light.”

First-runner up was awarded to Neil Totton, who also made it evident he is passionate about using his ‘gay for good’. Both will be recognized at a celebration/send-off party at NYC-JC Guest Suites on March 2, 2011. Also in attendance at the winners celebration will be the reigning Mr. Gay World, Charl Van Den Berg, as well as a special performance by Lori Michaels.

Online voting is taking place now for the Mr. Gay World competition, where everyone is encouraged to go place votes for Michael and support the US.

Alfonzo Chavez From CampusPride.org:

Official Call for Nominations announced today to profile LGBT progressive NCAA or NJCA collegiate athletic programs at colleges and universities across the country.

Nobody knows the score when it comes to collegiate athletic programs and where they stand on inclusion and safety of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) players, coaches and staff. For the first-time ever, Campus Pride, in partnership with Compete Magazine, plans to find out who the winners are for LGBT-inclusiveness in college sports -- and, ultimately, whether out LGBT athletes, coaches and staff are welcome.

Today Campus Pride launches its newly formed “Out to Play Project” which is designed to address anti-LGBT slurs, bias and conduct in college sports. As part of the national project, both Compete Magazine and Campus Pride will spend from March until June reviewing nominations of colleges and universities for the “Out To Play List.” The LGBT-friendly listing will be published in a special edition of Compete Magazine and online at CampusPride.org profiling the “Best” in LGBT-inclusivity and college sports.

Out.com recently released a list of 50 Essential Gay Films.  This list of films were selected by well-known people in the GLBT community including Directors John Cameron Mitchell, Greg Araki and John Waters, as well as Designer Michael Kors and fashion icon Tim Gunn.  You can read about that anywhere, but the reason we're giving it a mention is because some of them had a memorable scene involving sports or had a sports theme (and there weren't many).
Among the films with a sports theme or undertone include was Just One of the Guys. I'm sure not just lesbians, but gay men can also identify with this feeling of wondering what secrets lie in the lives of straight guys. We're mentioning this one because of the scene where the main character gets the misfortune of collection dirty jock straps....gross....then again, that your call, so add salt to taste.
Clueless,”  believe it or not deserves to be mentioned, specifically for the scene at PE Class when the girls are waiting in line for some tennis drills. The scene plays out as follows:

Amber: Ms. Stoeger, my plastic surgeon doesn’t want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose.
Dionne: Well, there goes your social life.

Personal Best is quite a bit more serious an entry, namely for the overall sports theme of women who  are working on qualifying for the US Olympic team. Sadly the US Boycotts the Olympics (that really happened in 1980) and their “Personal Best” for their qualifying round is all they have to rest on. Spartacus was included for its movie poster and you really can't deny the gay undertone of a movie where a bunch of muscular men are brought from far away nations, locked up and forced to fight with each other to the death. That would totally suck to have to fight your boyfriend to the death...and I'm sure some of you fantasize about that, but hey we don't judge.  The last movie with a mention is Beautiful Thing for its opening scene with a group of school kids at PE and its smart mouth PE coach in sari screaming “BAAAALLS! Mr. Bennett!”  There are a few other scenes in the movie where soccer is taking place and the kids wear quite a bit of soccer jerseys.

Do you have any favorite gay movies that have sports scenes or a sports theme?
